Cost of borrowing in Ontario
Payday loans are a form of high-cost credit. Ontario regulates them under the Payday Loans Act, 2008. Here is what that means for you, in plain terms.
Maximum cost of borrowing. $14 for every $100 you borrow. This is the most we can charge, inclusive of fees.
What that looks like. Borrow $300 for 14 days and the cost is $42. Expressed as an annual percentage rate (APR), that is about 365%.
Loan limits. You may borrow up to $1,500, and up to 50% of your net pay for the period, repayable within 62 days.
You get the full advance. By Ontario law the full loan amount is given to you up front. The fee is collected at repayment, never deducted in advance.
Two-day cancellation. You may cancel within two business days, with no fee and no reason required, by returning the principal.
No rollovers. We cannot give you a new payday loan to pay off an existing one. The first loan must be repaid in full first.
Extended payment plan. If you take three loans within 63 days, you are entitled to repay the third over multiple pay periods at no extra cost.
Missed payments. The maximum fee for a dishonoured (bounced) payment is $20. Interest may accrue on overdue amounts.
